Why Fes?

Students choose Fes as a study destination for many reasons. Fes is a complex city, founded over 1,200 years ago in 789 CE, with innumerable layers of historical and cultural legacies. Despite being one of Morocco’s largest cities, it exudes a laid back atmosphere and a uniquely authentic vibe not found in Morocco’s other major urban centers.

Fes, also Fez, (Fès in French, and فاس in Arabic) has two distinct environments; that of the old medina and then the new city (aka ville nouvelle). The medina, a medieval maze of narrow alleyways, has UNESCO World Heritage status. The ville nouvelle on the other hand, was built by the French and has wide tree-lined boulevards. Regardless of which Fes you’re in, you’ll find warm, welcoming people, legendary hospitality, and some of the best cuisine Morocco has to offer. In the medina trendy cafés dot the rooftop terraces and hidden restaurants serving traditional fare are at every corner. The ville nouvelle offers international cuisine, upscale cafés, and, of course, fast food.

As Morocco’s cultural capital, Fes too boasts a burgeoning arts and music scene. It is home to the World Sacred Music Festival, National Festival of Malhoun Music, and the Fez International Artists’ Gathering. Additionally, there are more than a dozen museums in Fes showcasing the city’s rich history and culture.

With an international airport serving domestic and international destinations and connections to most major cities by train, it’s easy to get here and explore all that Fes has to offer. Sunshine abounds for most of the year and its proximity to mountains, rivers, and national parks makes Fes an ideal spot for outdoor recreation and exploration.
