Courses below are six weeks in length. Students may also register for a 3-week course, which is the first three weeks of the courses listed below.
Those 3-week courses are designated with an "S" (short), MSA101S, MSA102S, etc. and are 60 hours.
MSA251: Multimedia Arabic I (A2)
This course will introduce the language of newspapers, magazines, and Internet news, giving students access to a wide range of Arabic media. With a focus on current affairs in Morocco and North Africa, students will read, listen to, and view authentic materials from various print and electronic media in Arabic. This course also includes a field trip to a local TV station. Prerequisite: MSA102 or Academic Coordinator's approval. (Six weeks, 90 hours*)
MSA252: Multimedia Arabic II (B1)
This course provides intermediate-level students with further knowledge of the language of the Arab media and develops listening and interpreting skills using Arabic-language newspapers, news websites, and Arabic-language radio and television. Students will understand and discuss news reports and media texts from a variety of audio-visual resources on trending topics in Morocco and the region. Prerequisite: MSA201, MSA251, or Academic Coordinator's approval. (Six weeks, 90 hours*)
MSA261: Contemporary North African Literature (B1+)
Survey of modern Arabic literature by major North African authors focusing on the short story genre with discussion of the cultural underpinnings of this literature as well as schools of criticism dealing with the authors in question. Knowledge of French and Maghrebi dialect(s) is helpful but not obligatory. Prerequisite: MSA201 or Academic Coordinator's approval. (Six weeks, 90 hours*)
MSA351: Introduction to Islam and Its Texts (B2)
This course will allow students to acquire a knowledge of Islam through its primary sources, such as the Qur’an and Hadith. Students will understand and discuss some of the current issues in the Muslim world, particularly focused on Morocco, through the lens of these sources. Topics covered in this course may include Islamic philosophy, political Islam, cultural heritage in literature, the impact of the religion on migration, and sacred Muslim holidays. Prerequisite: MSA201 or Academic Coordinator's approval. (Six weeks, 90 hours*)
*Please note: For all classes, there must be 3 or more students. If there are 2 students, hours of instruction will be reduced. If there is only one student, the course will be considered a private class.
