NAS351: Language, Culture, and Moroccan Identity
Language and culture are intertwined, and Morocco is a prime example of this. They are determining factors for an individual’s sense of belonging and identity, as well as seeds of national identity and social authenticity. It is through language that we define ourselves, our environment, and our relation to each other and to the rest of the world.
This course explores different aspects of Moroccan linguistic varieties, in conjunction with Moroccan society and culture, and how these impact language use in Morocco. It will present the linguistic landscape in the Arab world and investigate more fully the multilingual situation in Morocco, its ramifications for language choice patterns, and attitudes of language use among Moroccans. The diglossic situation in Morocco and the status of Tamazight and French and their impact on the linguistic map of Morocco will also be examined.
